Question
There was a charge on my account. I disputed it. Even though I had the card still in my possession they told me that it is being reported lost or stolen and that they would issue a new card. Ok, what happens next? Do they go to the merchant and investigate this? If they find that I didn't use the card does the person that used it get into trouble? What I think it was is that a so called friend used my credit card while I was there to buy her medication at the pharmacy. Now I can't prove this but the next time she picks up her prescriptions will they bill her for the charge? Just curious about what happens next.
Answer 1
1) if you dispute a charge on your credit card, the credit card company will check to see if it was you.
They'll do this by asking the merchant (with whom the item was bought) for more information. If they are happy it wasn't you, then the merchant will need to pay. If they think it was you, you'll need to pay.
2) If they find you didn't use the card and they have it on CCTV or other evidence that it was your friend, then yes she will get into a lot of trouble. It would be fraud. She's buying something and she expects someone else to pick up the tab! It will be reported to the police.
3) If it was your friend, you could be liable as you were not careful enough with your credit card. You would also be liable for knowing who it was who made the transaction and not notifying the card company. For all the credit card company knows, you could be in it together.
4) You'll get a new credit card issued so if your 'friend' trys to pay next time, using the old credit card, it will be invalid.
I think it's time to stop hanging out with this friend.
